I see Cypress to Paul in the spreadsheet also. Hopefully a candidate for bike lanes.

Are ADA curbcuts part of the work? Ward/Centre crosswalks probably could be placed better, curb cuts are missing / not ADA.

Could radii be tightened? Would it help to do that with paint?

Consider green paint for bike lanes through the intersection. Does that help highlight ped crossings as well?

Ward to Nathan is sharrows with wide vehicle lanes and wasted space in the middle. Could proper bike lanes be striped here? How about bike accommodations between Nathan and Comm? Does the left turn queue really need to be a full block in length?

Between Trinity and Homer: three lanes are not needed. The queue for left turns is not that long, and there is a common problem where cars will skip traffic then cut back in, either aggressively or out of ignorance. Saved space would help channel traffic and could make safe bike spaces for this stretch.

Ditto for very long left turn lane for Homer. Consider a much shorter left turn lane and shift 10’ traffic lanes towards the middle of the road.

School crossing at Gibbs must be made shorter. Two travel lanes + two bike lanes should be sufficient (~30 ft). Painted lane markings, flex posts at the corners, and a shorter ped phase to match.

Is Willow & Centre within the limits of work this season? Because that would need its own thread.

@peller Yes and this is something I spoke to Jason about several years back. I was told both the NE and the SE corners could be squared off but needed to wait until after the water main work. So if they’re paving it now in 2022… Why not do this now? Attached is a diagram I sent him. See also the photo of the distance between the curb and the actual line of travel. People routinely stand in the street waiting for the light to turn.

Also, correct, there are no ADA curbs despite this heavily used area. Five synagogues within two blocks in each direction, plus BC law school one block away, plus Perkins School for the Blind a short distance down Centre St.

Is the list of ADA curb cuts funded from the Commission on Disability a separate list or part of the road paving list?

Also worth noting that some of the signal equipment and posts are placed exactly where you would want the ramps. ADA will recommend (though not strictly require) two perpendicular ramps on each corner vs apex.

DPW tells me that Centre St is “not planning on doing any paving on Centre Street this year, due to needed underground utility work on Centre Street, including both gas main work and MWRA water lines.”

and 'it is also not a lost opportunity for future intersection improvements."

Not sure how this Centre from Mill to Ward got onto the paving schedule but there you have it…

These new gas mains are controversial. They are new piping that can accommodate hydrogen and not always at the areas with the biggests leaks. 350Mass and Mother’s Out Front oppose them.
