"Just Paint" projects are roadway improvements that can be made with just paint: no engineering studies, construction, or change of regulations required.
“Just Paint” projects can be done faster and generally require less review than projects that require engineering. They can often be implemented by a painting contractor out of an existing paint budget. Examples of “just paint” projects include the following types of improvements:
- Addition of roadway edge lines
- Addition of crosswalks if curb ramps on both ends already exist
- Shifting the position of a center line (may be more difficult because of the existing paint)
- Stop lines at existing stop signs and signals (this one may turn out not to be quick, depending on the location)
They cannot include the following changes (you can always report them to 311):
- Installation of curb ramps
- Other construction of any kind
- Additional paving
- Removal of parking
- Installation of signs (especially stop and yield signs)
- Change of speed limit
- Modification of school zone markings
- Installing bike lanes if parking is currently allowed or there’s not space.
This is not a formal city process or forum. These projects are suggestions to Newton Transportation Planning and Public Works. There’s no formal approval process and no timeline. Listing a project here doesn’t guarantee it will get done. This list does, however, make these potential improvements and the need for them visible to City Staff, advocates, and the public.
Please create one topic per project or location (but you can reference other projects using links). Attach pictures and a map to illustrate your point. If work gets completed or otherwise acted upon, please change the status of the project.
