2020-2021 sidewalk snow plowing

Every winter, Newton DPW plows miles of sidewalks during and after snow storms. Priorities include routes to school, transit, and major civic destinations.

Planning of these routes begins in the fall based on feedback. Please comment to improve these routes.

Newton School desire lines map (usage notes)

Hi Mike - I strongly support Grant Avenue between Commonwealth and Beacon being cleared. This is a main route to the Newton Center T and a busy narrow street with speeding issues.

Even though it looks like single family housing, there are many hidden sublets for students and home/health care aides plus residents who use this route.

Which side would be preferred? And any chance this ties in with a school route?

I know that most of the snow removal discussion has centered on schools, but give the current COVID situation, we should also be focusing on other locations, like the various walking paths. Places like the Charles River Path often ice up in the winter and I fear that this year will be worse than ever. Obviously, there are ownership issues here (DCR controls the river paths) but we should be working with those groups to ensure that we have the right removal patterns.

Good point - it looks like DCR stops removing snow along the Charles River Path at Galen headed west.
